A blog’s posts are organized into categories. Using categories gives you a way to help Web site visitors navigate your blog based on topic.
Categories are hierarchical, which means you can have categories with subcategories and even sub-subcategories.
Two Ways to Add Categories
Option 1: Add Categories before You Blog
- Log into Wordpress and go to Posts»Categories in the lefthand menu.
- Enter the name of your category in the Category Name field.

Add a New Category
- Enter the category slug in the Category Slug field. This allows you to control the Web address for this category. In the following example, when someone navigates to the category page “Web Design Tips,” its Web address would be http://yourdomain.com/category/web-design-tips.
Tip: Giving your slug a clear and descriptive name that incorporates relevant keywords makes your site much more search engine friendly!
- Assign a Category Parent from the dropdown menu. This is how you make a category top-level or a “child” of a higher-level category. Your JiffyBat! site is set up in such a way that requires you to make all of your blog categories children of a “master” category. Your friendly JiffyBat! developer will explain this completely during your initial training.
- You can enter a description of the category if you like. Some Wordpress themes display this information (your JiffyBat! site probably will display this text as a tooltip when a user hovers over the link with his/her mouse). I add a description when I want a reminder to myself about what the category is to be used for.
- Click Add Category.
You’re finished! Now you will see the new category on the right side of the Add Category screen in your list of saved categories. You can edit and delete categories in this section.

Option 2: Add Categories while You’re Editing a Post
Suppose you’ve just written or updated a post, and you decide you want to create a new category for it. No problem—the Edit Post screen lets you create categories on the fly.
- On the Edit Post Screen, click the + Add New Category link at the bottom of the Categories box in the right-hand column of your screen.
- Type the name of your category into the New category name field.
- Assign a parent category if necessary. (Remember, JiffyBat! customers must assign the parent blog category.)
- Click the Add button.
